| Berta Haley lost her bid to keep half the
jackpot winnings from her ex-boyfriend, David Thompson. Haley had hoped to argue before the Supreme Court of Canada that lower-court rulings ordering her to forfeit half the cash should be overturned. Thompson, in his mid-50s, successfully sued Haley in January, 2000 for half the prize. She ended their three-year, common-law relationship and left their home in Arborfield, Sask., just after realizing the 2-month-old ticket was a winner, he said. Thompson, a former farmhand and part-time musician said he bought the ticket in Tisdale, Sask., on the understanding any winnings would be equally shared. Haley, 50, accused Thompson of abuse. She said she bought the ticket in Arborfield, and had planned to leave him for months, calling the lotto win a mere coincidence. The trial judge believed Thompson after lottery officials testified the ticket was bought in Tisdale, some 50 kilometres from Arborfield. The Saskatchewan Court of Appeal unanimously ruled in June that the case boiled down to whose version of events the trial judge believed. It found no reason to interfere. |
