| Ferne Hawley had just lost her job at
a Cape Breton Home Hardware store. She said, "Just last week, we were almost
crying, saying 'What are we going to do to pay our bills?'" "I broke
down & cried for 20 minutes," said her longtime partner Tom Young
after finding out they won. The New Waterford couple have 5 children
between them. Plans for the windfall include building a new home,
buying new cars & helping family. Ferne's sister, who has Spina
Bifida, will receive a new car customized to fit her needs & a new
1-level home. The lottery winnings topped off a good weekend for the couple. They had gone to the casino in Sydney for supper Saturday. Each had $20 to play in the slot machines. "I put in a quarter and hit a jackpot of $375. So I gave Tom some of that, and on his very first quarter . . . he won a jackpot. It's why we decided to buy the lottery tickets. After all, good things come in threes," Hawley said. The couple stupidly plans to continue buying tickets because "you have to support someone who helps you," Young said. She was so overwhelmed by strangers asking her for money she had a heart attack. "I wish I could give it all back," said the 43-year old. Since then, the letters, phone calls and knocks on the door haven't stopped. It got so bad, Hawley & her family fled to London, Ontario, over a thousand miles away, where she had her heart attack. "I'm feeling much better now," Hawley said Tuesday. "Now I just tear up the letters, & if anyone calls, I tell them they need to talk to my husband. |

the time. Later that night the 2 men stopped at a gas station
outside Moncton to check the winning numbers. They never made it to
the car show. "I'm not going to forget him," Hunter said of his
friend. "We'll be sure to buy him a little treat." The 1st item on the Hunters' shopping list is a new insulin pump for 15-year-old daughter Jade, who has diabetes. set aside money to educate 2 sons, aged 5 & 3, & a daughter, 19
months. She's told her father he no longer needs to report for his factory
job; she's sending him on a trip to his native Guyana. Her mother, 3
sisters & brother will also share in her good fortune — as well as
the 2 women who have been sharing Mentore's $730-per-month apartment.
She says the father of her children essentially abandoned them, with
neither emotional or financial support. "I've been doing it (the
parenting) myself." That's why the 26-year-old seized the chance to
send him a message yesterday, wherever he may be: "Don't come
looking for me now." Raised in Markham, Mentore moved to Hamilton
2 years ago for lower rent. Mentore's resume spans a litany of odd jobs. She hasn't even passed her probationary period as a personal support worker at Hamilton Regency Care Centre, where she makes $14.29 an hour. She claims that she won't give it up. The former oilfield consultant checked them on the Internet later that evening and saw that he split the $5 million jackpot with another ticket sold in Quebec. The father of 3, grandfather of 10 & great grandfather of 2 stated, "When I was sure I'd won, I immediately thought about retiring & finally getting some toys I've always wanted!" from his job at a tractor factory. It was the first ticket he'd purchased
since his birthday in November. He & his wife, Pam, plan to buy a new
house & move out of their mobile home. "Between us," he said, motioning to
his wife, "we only had $100. We needed it."
They are both 24 years old. They have a 4-year
old daughter, Taylor, & 6-month old son, Devin. Pam, who works at a daycare
centre, said
the couple plans to return to school & she hopes to become a nurse. He
wants to become a mechanic & then open his own shop. Yesterday morning, when the store clerk asked if he'd like a lottery ticket, Rivers smartly said, "Oh, I don't think so," unlike most gamblers who refuse to quit while they're ahead even after winning a jackpot. While the jackpot was advertised as $89 million, they will only end up with about 1/3 or U$35 million after-tax cash. They will have to wait up to 2 more weeks to receive the money, so all they got after driving to Indianapolis was a small red bag with Hoosier Lottery souvenirs! |

| Raymond Sobeski finally came forward as the
winner of the single largest lottery prize in Canadian history, just days
before the ticket would have become a worthless piece of paper. He is
a longtime farmer who was forced to get into computer repair to offset
farming losses. The 47-year old bachelor wants to use his windfall to help
out his elderly parents & take care of his 2 sisters and a brother. He used
a Quick Pick since his own numbers never won. "Due to the magnitude of it, I just wanted to make sure that I did everything right and tried to remain calm about it and not do anything rash, and make a plan and get some professional help," he explained. In fact, he only told his mother about the win Friday morning. By waiting the year, Sobeski lost at least $500,000 in potential interest. But he says that didn't bother him. Court documents show that he is actually a divorced father of 2 & was recently sued by ex-wife Sherry Sobeski for child support payments. Nynna Ionson claims she is still married to Sobeski. "When he comes back we're gonna celebrate," she said. She has a bottle of champagne a bank reportedly gave him after he picked up his winning cheque. "We've been together on and off for nine-and-a-half years," she said. "We were married and together." She didn't know Sobeski had won - even though they had spent the night having sex at Quality Inn in Woodstock after he had picked up his winning cheque. "It's been the worst year of my life, and it could have been better," she said. Ionson said she loves Sobeski & hopes she won't have to pursue what she says she deserves ($15 million?!). On May 4, 2004, Sobeski suddenly found himself unable to withdraw enough money for a trip to Tim Hortons, let alone to a Porsche dealership. He had half his assets frozen by a court, pending legal action by Ionson. According to Ionson's records, the couple had sex once in Mr. Sobeski's car, four times at the Burlington Holiday Inn, once at the London Airport Inn & once at Mr. Sobeski's rented home near Woodstock. Sobeski's second wife has also retained a lawyer to explore her options with respect to child support. |

| Ibi Roncaioli split the $10 million with her
manicurist & friend Lyudmila Hiutin in 1991. On July 20, 2003, police were called after
a man had reported that his wife had stopped breathing. 66-year old Ibi
was rushed to hospital where she was pronounced dead. Her husband, Dr.
Joseph Roncaioli, 67, has been charged with criminal negligence causing
death. "It was a combination of drugs that the woman died from," said
police. They say drugs were found in the woman's body that had not been
prescribed. Born in Hungary, but a Canadian resident for 40 years at the time of her win, Ibi described herself as a "domestic engineer." She said she would give some of the money to family and charities. "The first people I think of are people who have to stand in line for food." A 1960 University of Toronto graduate, Dr. Roncaioli works out of a Finch Ave West office in Downsview, and was a physician at Humber River Regional Hospital. |
